Advent countdowns sound lovely in theory. Something that actually points back to why we’re celebrating, instead of just a chocolate calendar the kids tear through before breakfast. But most Decembers, life gets busy, and it either doesn’t happen or it fizzles out within the first week.
So this year I made something simple enough to actually work: a printable Advent countdown that takes five minutes a day, walks through the whole Christmas story in order, and doesn’t require anyone to have their act together on December 1st.
25 Days of Advent
This is a set of 25 cards, one for each day of December leading up to Christmas. Each card has a short scripture reference, a couple of sentences on what’s happening in the story that day, and one small, doable action to go with it. That’s it. No big devotional book, no half-hour lesson plan — just enough to open, read, and talk about for a few minutes before everyone scatters.
The cards move through the Christmas story in the order it actually happened — starting with the Old Testament prophecies that promised a Savior was coming, through Mary and Joseph’s story, the journey to Bethlehem, the night Jesus was born, and finally the shepherds and wise men who came to find Him. By the time you get to Christmas Day, you’ve walked through the whole story together, one small piece at a time.
What’s on Each Card
Every one of the 25 cards includes:
A short scripture reference for the day
A couple of sentences on what’s happening in the passage
One small action to go with it — nothing complicated, just something you can actually do that day
A date, so you always know which card comes next
The actions are things like sending a Christmas card to someone far away, looking at the stars together, giving away something you don’t need, or just sitting quietly for a minute to think about what Christmas means. Nothing that needs a trip to the shops or a Pinterest-worthy craft table. Just small, doable things that fit into a normal, busy December.
How to Use It
However suits your family best, really. A few ideas:
Envelopes: Cut the cards apart, pop each one in a small numbered envelope, and pin or tape them up somewhere the kids will see them every day.
String and pegs: Peg them onto a piece of string or ribbon in order, like a garland, and move a marker along each day.
Just a pile: Honestly, a stack of cards in a bowl on the table works just as well. Pull the next one out after dinner.
However you set it up, the actual “using it” part looks the same: read the card, talk about it for a minute, do the small action if you can, and move on with your day. Some days that’ll turn into a longer conversation. Other days it’s thirty seconds and everyone’s back to what they were doing. Both are fine.
Why I Made It This Way
The Advent calendars that actually stick around a house are never the fussiest ones. They’re the ones simple enough to keep up with on a Tuesday night when everyone’s tired and dinner ran late. So that’s what I aimed for here — something that respects how a real December actually goes, rather than the version of December we all plan for in November and never quite live up to.
I also wanted my kids to get the whole story, not just the parts that make it into the nativity set. The prophecies matter. Elizabeth’s joy matters. Mary treasuring things in her heart matters. All of it builds toward the same moment, and I think there’s something good about slowing down enough to see the whole thread instead of just arriving at December 25th without much lead-up.
A Few Practical Notes
If you’re doing this with a mix of ages, don’t worry about the younger kids needing to “get” every card. Read it, ask if they noticed anything, and move on. The goal isn’t a perfect theological discussion every night — it’s a habit of pausing together, even briefly, during a month that’s usually anything but quiet.
And if you miss a day (or five), that’s genuinely fine. There’s no prize for a perfect streak here. Pick back up wherever you left off, or double up on a quieter night. The point is the twenty-five conversations altogether, not doing them in perfect, unbroken order.
