There’s a particular kind of love that grandparents carry that’s hard to put into words — not because it’s complicated, but because so much of it lives in the everyday moments. A phone call. A story told for the tenth time. A quiet prayer said over a sleeping grandchild that nobody else ever hears. It’s real, it’s deep, and an awful lot of it never actually gets written down anywhere.
That’s what this printable is for.
What is Dear Grandchild?
Dear Grandchild is a keepsake journal for a grandparent to fill in — either sitting down together with a grandchild, or quietly on their own as a gift to give later. It’s part memory book, part love letter, and part written blessing, blending the stories that make up a family’s history with the faith a grandparent wants to pass down.
It’s not something you’re meant to finish in an afternoon. Some pages might take five minutes. Others might sit half-finished for a few weeks before the right words come. Both are completely fine — the goal isn’t a perfectly completed book, it’s an honest one.
What’s Inside
The journal moves through a few different kinds of pages:
- Memory pages — the day they were born, the moment you found out you’d be a grandparent, a favorite memory the two of you share
- Legacy pages — a story about your family’s history, the best advice you want to pass down, what you hope they always remember about you
- Faith pages — a Bible verse chosen just for them, a written prayer over their life, a blessing to speak or read aloud
- A photo page — space to tape or glue in a favorite picture of the two of you together
- A closing page — a final note and a place to sign it, “with all my love”
Every page has a short prompt at the top and plenty of room underneath to actually write — no need to keep it brief or polished.
How to Use It
There’s no required order here, so start wherever feels most natural. If you’re doing this with your grandchild sitting right next to you, maybe start with a lighter page — “what makes you, you” is a nice one to begin with, since kids tend to enjoy hearing themselves described. If you’re filling it in privately as a gift, you might want to start with the memory pages while the details are still fresh, and save the faith and blessing pages for a quieter, more reflective moment.
If you’re a long-distance grandparent, this works just as well over a phone or video call — read the prompt out loud, talk it through together, and jot down notes to write up properly afterward. Distance doesn’t have to mean the relationship feels distant.
Don’t feel pressure to fill every line on every page. A few honest sentences will mean more to your grandchild one day than a page filled out just to look complete.
Why I Wanted to Make This
I think about all the things I know about my own grandparents mostly through secondhand stories — memories other people passed along, rather than anything written in their own words. I don’t have anything in their own handwriting, in their own voice, telling me what they hoped for my life or why they chose the things they chose for me.
I wanted to make something that closes that gap a little. Something that captures not just facts — dates, places, names — but the actual heart behind a relationship. The blessing pages especially matter to me; there’s something different about a grandchild being able to read, in their grandparent’s own words, a prayer that was written specifically over their life.
A Couple of Practical Notes
This journal works whether your grandchild is a baby who won’t read it for years, or old enough to sit down and fill in pages with you right now. If they’re very young, consider filling it in on their behalf now and setting it aside for them to receive when they’re older — a kind of time capsule.
It also doesn’t have to be limited to one grandchild if you have several. Print a fresh copy for each one; the prompts are personal enough that each child deserves their own filled-in version, not a shared one.
If you’re not sure what to write for the faith pages, don’t overthink it. A verse doesn’t need a complicated explanation — sometimes “I chose this one because it reminds me of how brave you are” is exactly enough.
Grab Your Free Copy
Dear Grandchild is completely free to download and print at home. Regular printer paper works fine, though if you’re planning to keep this as a long-term keepsake, printing on cardstock and keeping it in a binder or folder will help it hold up for years to come.
